The annual Trends of the Game breakfast was held at the Panthers Sports Club with Australian coaches Peter Bell (18’s Girls), Kerry Norman (Women’s Open) and Tony Trad (Men’s Open) taking turns to speak to the audience about all things touch. Australian Mixed Open player Tony Eltakchi was the MC for the event. Bell spoke about constructing an elite game plan and the tactics younger players need in order to step up to the next level. He also told how the planning he had in place helped contribute to leading his 18’s Girls team to victory in the Youth Trans Tasman earlier this year. His speech consisted of elements of the game including A’s, line attack, driving, mid-field defence and line defence. He also spoke about the formula of success = preparation. Norman spoke of the principle of rucking and its importance and that controlling the ball can ensure that you control the game. Norman also spoke of her observations of rucking issues on day one competition at the 2009 X-Blades National Youth Championships and how to solve these problems. Tony Trad was next to take the stage, teaching the crowd about principles of line attack and acting half running. He told the audience about high and low percentage options and phase play and the significance of seeking help from the best in the business. “It’s really important to answer questions here at the presentation, at the fields, or via email…the purpose of these breakfasts is that TFA are trying to make resources available to you and we are part of those resources,” Trad said. You can be sure that the players, coaches and referees that attended the event will no doubt try to implement the things they learnt at the breakfast throughout the rest of the tournament.
