first_img Watch 12 Hours of Alexei From ‘Stranger Things’ Sipping a SlurpeeWhat to Stream on Netflix This Weekend The first step is admitting you have a problem. And when you’ve binge-watched an entire 24-episode season of Pretty Little Liars without food, bathroom, or phone breaks, and haven’t moved your legs in so long you’re not sure they’re still attached to your body, you have a problem.Last week, the Service for Healthy Use of Technology (SHUT) clinic at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru, India, received its first case of Netflix addiction. As reported by The Hindu, a 26-year-old unemployed man turned to the streaming service to “shut out reality for more than six months.”“Whenever his family pressurized him to earn a living, or when he saw his friends doing well, he would watch the shows on offer continuously,” according to Manoj Kumar Sharma, a NIMHANS professor of clinical psychology and head of the SHUT clinic. “He could forget about his problems, and he derived immense pleasure from it.”The patient (left unnamed by the newspaper) became dependent on Netflix, turning on the TV first thing in the morning and turning it off last thing at night. But, as with most addictions, the comfort of the compulsion was short-lived: Unable to exercise self-control, he developed eye strain, fatigue, and disturbed sleeping patterns, The Hindu said.Eventually, he sought help.Doctors at the clinic are now addressing psychological issues through therapy, relaxation exercises, and career guidance. This is a first for the center, which has previously treated people for online gaming addictions.Early this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) incorporated “gaming disorder” into its 11th International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), officially classifying it as a medical condition.Indian educational institutions are also worried about this trend—so much so they’ve begun counseling parents and students on early warning signs of addiction.“The best advice is to avoid the use of technology if it becomes a coping mechanism,” Sharma suggested.Of course, that’s easier said than done. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have 22 episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to get back to.Addiction can have severe consequences: A young mother faced charges in 2010 after letting her two dogs starve to death and three kids fend for themselves while she played online strategy game Small World. Eight weeks of Candy Crush Saga caused someone’s thumb tendon to rupture, and a man sued Bethesda when he became so engrossed in Fallout 4 that he lost his job and his wife.
